"Uncryptic" bubbly drinks with Bill Coen & Simon Hills

On Thursday 28th April 2022, we held an informal discussions on salient topics of the day, from crypto assets to the multiple shades of SA-CCR fragmentation of Basel III implementations and other regulatory challenges. The event was hosted by The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) at the Chartered Accountants' Hall in London.

The private peer-to-peer discussion with William (Bill) Coen, the former Secretary General of the Basel Committee, and Simon Hills, Director, Prudential Regulation, Financial and Risk Policy, UK Finance.

William (Bill) Coen is the former Secretary General of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) and the Chief Regulatory Adviser at Suade. During his time at the BCBS, Bill managed and oversaw the development and implementation of Basel III in response to the global financial crisis of 2007. Bill’s work continues to shape the global financial system which has benefited from improvements in stability and soundness through Basel III. Bill joined Suade as Chief Regulatory Adviser in 2021 to assist in bringing data standardisation and modern technology to the sphere of financial regulation.

Simon Hills leads the Prudential, Reporting and Tax Team at UK Finance, focusing on influencing the implementation in the UK and more widely. He interacts with politicians, finance ministries, regulators and central bankers around the world. Simon's banking background is in fixed income sales, trading and origination and he also has experience of energy and aerospace project finance. He is also interested in crisis management, Recovery and Resolution Planning and different types of bank capital and funding instruments. Simon studied at London Business School and Imperial College and has also completed a Masters’ in Financial Services Regulation at Guildhall University. He is liveryman of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers and a former member of the European Banking Authority’s Banking Stakeholder Group.

This Chatham House Rule discussion has provided an opportunity for industry leaders to discuss with Bill and Simon the latest progress in implementing Basel III. In addition, the discussion focused on building regulatory and risk management agility, so financial institutions can respond efficiently and effectively to the current environment while preparing for the future. We addressed technology and data best practices, and how they could best be leveraged to comply with the forthcoming Basel rules. The discussion has also featured a forward-looking focus on geopolitical uncertainty, sanctions, cryptocurrency exposures, sustainability, and prudential regulation.
